Incoterms is short for international commercial terms. These were first published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in 1936. The ICC publishes updates to the Incoterms every once in awhile and the latest overhaul to the Incoterms was published in 2019, effective in 2020. The latest set of terms are referred to as Incoterms 2020. On September 10, the ICC published Incoterms® 2020, the first update to these terms since 2010. The new Incoterms® will enter into effect January 2020. Incoterms® 2020 will affect how companies understand their responsibilities at each stage of an international trade transaction, with potential implications for their bottom line. The Incoterms® 2020 are only applicable if the parties of an international trade transaction explicitly agree so. It is still possible to continue to agree on the previous Incoterms® 2010. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) set out to make Incoterms ® 2020 easier to access and the updated rules define who, between a seller and buyer is responsible for the costs and risks associated with delivering goods.
